Foynes and Foynes Island,
Co Limerick Aerial view

This aerial photo shows the river Shannon at Foynes, situated about 18
miles downstream from Limerick city as the crow flies.
Foynes was an important location in avaition history as it was from here
that flying boats landed and departed on scheduled transatlantic passenger flights between Europe and America in the late 1930's and early '40's.
Foynes now has a growing museum dedicated to those flying boat years, a recent addition of which is a recreation of the control tower.
