Aerial photo of Kilkenny Castle, one of the main tourist attractions in Kilkenny city. Kilkenny Design Craft Centre also seen here is located just across the road in what were once the stables and coach houses for the castle.
Work commenced on this stone built castle in 1195 for William the Earl Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and was sited on a previous wooden defensive structure constructed by Strongbow to protect the early Norman settlement and river traffic on the Nore River. The castle was completed in 1213.
