Although we'd flown the area many times before, this was a totally
unplanned aerial location, spotted as we were heading back to land at
Shannon Airport which was our base for the day.
The low early spring light picked out what appeared to be a prominent
and extensive archaeological site so I captured a few frames to research later.
Coincidentally this turned out to be Ardpatrick and was photographed only a
few
days prior to Saint Patrick's day ( 17th March ).
From what I've just read, this early Christian 5th century monastic site
according to legend was founded by Saint Patrick, Ireland's national
saint and is situated on an earlier pre Christian hill fort.
